She mentioned to me that she was getting a light bar with driving lights installed on top of her FJ Cruiser. As we discussed it, an image sort of popped into my brain – of her FJ, with all the lights blazing, and her standing in front of it, not all smiley, but sort of badass looking. I mentioned this to her and she was enthusiastic about the idea. We agreed that, someday, “when it got nicer out”, we would do the picture. Then she took another job in a big city far away and told me she was having the light bar removed because of low parking garages etc. where she was moving. So – it was now or never!

The next day we pulled her FJ in front of an old brick horse stable and made some shots. Jacque is a certified “ham” and a natural model, so she made her part seem easy. Using small apertures, slow shutter, fill flash and bracketing, I tried to make the best ingredients for the image I had envisioned. Then I “cooked” it using layers, compositing and extreme HDR, I came up with a final image that very much fulfilled my original vision. Oh, then I threw in the ground fog, just for giggles.

Fun with water droplets http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2014/3/fun-with-water-droplets Saw some water drop shots online and decided to give it a try.

Operating room - IV bag (sandwich bag with hole in corner, filled with water, hanging from light fixture), high intensity lights (flash, off camera), wireless controller for flash, 8 1/2 x 11 paper, cooking oil, wine etc.

Instruments - DSLR, 55 to 300 lens with extension tubes to shorten minimum focus, remote shutter control, tripod.

Prognosis - fun and surprising results. Will do more complex trials soon.

"Funky Bench" http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2013/12/-funky-bench Funky BenchFunky BenchCeramic artist Lisa Fremont made this very cool bench. The close up shows all the "figures within the figures" in the details.

While visiting family over the holiday weekend, I made a couple shots of this remarkable ceramic bench that was created by our sister-in-law, Lisa Pesha Fremont of Chicago. This is so cool! Just look closely at all the "figures within figures" contained in the detail of this piece. Lisa worked on this over a two year period and was partially  influenced by Park Güell by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona and Niki de Saint Phalle's Tarot park in Italy.   Below are a couple more shots of it.

Harbor Lights http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2013/9/harbor-lights Harbor LightsHarbor LightsHarbor Lights by Chuck Bennett So... you stand on a pier on a dark night. You point your camera towards the city lights across the bay. You set it up for a loooong, sloooww exposure. Then, when you trip the shutter you simultaneously twist the zoom collar on your lens. Ok, I was nearing the end of a long drive, I wasn't happy with the moon shots I originally stopped at this pier for, so I said "what the heck - let's have some fun!"

What do 570 eager and enthusiastic photographers look like? http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2013/9/what-do-570-eager-and-enthusiastic-photographers-look-like

This week I drove 240 miles one-way to attend a Scott Kelby photography seminar. I was amazed to arrive at the venue and see this huge swarm of bodies! Five hundred and seventy people registered for this. That’s one big bunch of photography nuts! Was it worth the drive and a whole day of my time? Heck yes! This is the second Scott Kelby seminar that I have attended. The previous one was a couple of years ago. Scott is a down to earth presenter that shares a ton of knowledge and useful tips on taking good photographs, and information on lower cost alternative equipment like lighting, lenses, remote triggers etc. He “de-bunks” many myths and recommends less “over thinking” regarding f-stops, shutter speeds, file formats, “the best” equipment etc. Scott offers a few simple formulas for getting great shots with less angst.

After the first seminar, I mentally tagged Scott as a “generous” celebrity. What does that mean? To me it means that he freely makes himself available during the breaks for questions, book signings, photos with him etc. Again, at the end of this seminar, when many presenters would scoot for the door, he offered to stay around as long as his airport schedule will allow to try and “not leave anyone with that burning question that they just wanted to get answered “.

Moon over Sulphur Island http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2013/8/moon-over-sulphur-island After the Taste of the Town cleanup last night I was headed home and when crossing Squaw Bay noted the fantastic moon rising. I found a place to pull in and walk down closer to the lake-shore and grab a couple of shots. Couldn't see my camera settings and the mosquitoes attacked me in droves - so I did not set up all the shots I would have liked to, but...

Another beach - far, far away. http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2013/3/another-beach---far-far-away Madeira Beach FL The beach was almost deserted. It was the Gulf Coast of Florida on Madeira Beach. The last day of February was cold by Florida standards, but to a Michigander it was a good day for a walk on the sand. It looked like storm clouds would obscure the sunset but then the clouds parted for just a few brief minutes and I got off a couple of shots.

Nothing to shoot? http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2013/3/nothing-to-shoot Digital photo of backup tape So, it's a bleak, dark, cold winter day with flat light outside and "frozen belt buckle" temperatures. I have a little rare free time and I'm itching to "mess" with my camera. What do I shoot? Wait - here is a box of old computer stuff. In it there is an old tape backup cartridge. Hmmm, I wonder what it would look like if I take the screws out of the cover and pull the tape out and pile it up on the table? I take a few shots, put them in PhotoShop Elements, play with filters and - here is one result. I did a few different variations of this. I kind of like it. It was fun. So - there is never "nothing to shoot".

Old Man River http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2013/1/old-man-river Thunder Bay River - winter sunrise

Old Man River was wearing quite a splendid coat of many colors this morning. On my way to work, I had to pull over and park and walk out on the bridge to grab some shots. After a few minutes in ten degree cold my shutter finger was pretty much frozen – but it was worth the effort. A little HDR post work was entailed in the final product.

Light and visual trickery http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2013/1/light-and-visual-trickery LaFarge plant in surreal light This shot was taken on January 1st from the beach in Ossineke - some ten miles away from the LaFarge plant. On most days it looks small on the horizon across the bay. On certain days however, when the sun is bright and the atmosphere is clear, it looms up like a mirage - much larger and sometimes even displaced from it's location. On this day, those natural light tricks combined with the compression effect of a long telephoto lens make it seem as though you could jump in a skiff and row quickly over to the complex.

Moonlight becomes you. http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2013/1/moonlight-becomes-you On the evening of December 27th, I was busy with various things when I happened to look out the window and notice a fabulous moon rising over the bay. I took quite a few shots. Normally I tend to shoot the moon pretty sharply but this time I decided to play with a very slow exposure to create the "starburst" effect on the moon and to fluff the clouds a bit. I kind of like the result.

Lens Envy http://gallery.cbennettphotos.com/blog/2012/12/lens-envy

There were three Bald Eagles playing on the beach this morning. Unfortunately, it was a wide open expanse with no cover so I could not get close enough for tack sharp images without spooking the birds. Also, not time to set up with tripod so the shot is handheld. This was the full reach of my lens and then blown up so not so sharp - but better than missing the shot. I have some others of two Eagles together on the snow, but they are also pretty grainy by the time I blow them up. Oh to have a huge lens on a tripod at times like this :)
